Each year, Memorial Day calls us to remember—with reverence and gratitude—the brave men and women who laid down their lives in defense of our great Republic. It is a day not only of mourning but of solemn recommitment. As Americans gather in cemeteries, town squares, and homes across the nation, we do more than pay tribute to those who have perished—we affirm the cause for which they died: the enduring principles enshrined in the United States Constitution.
At the heart of every military oath is a sacred vow—not to a king, not to a party, not even to a president, but to the Constitution of the United States. That document, born in 1787, is not a relic of the past. It is the living framework of our liberty, the blueprint of a nation rooted in individual rights, limited government, and the rule of law. Our service members take this oath not lightly, but with the weight of generations of sacrifice on their shoulders. And when they fall in battle, it is that oath they die defending.
The 917 Society stands in that same spirit of duty. We are devoted to honoring our fallen heroes not only in word, but in deed. Our mission is to ensure that future generations understand and cherish the very Constitution that so many have died to protect. Each year, we provide free pocket Constitutions to eighth-grade students across America. Why eighth grade? Because it is the year many students begin studying U.S. history and civics—and it is a crucial age for shaping the minds of tomorrow’s leaders, voters, and defenders of freedom.
We do this not simply as an act of civic generosity, but as a moral imperative. To forget the Constitution is to diminish the meaning of the sacrifices made in its name. To neglect educating our youth in the blessings of liberty is to risk the very freedoms our heroes died to preserve. As President Ronald Reagan warned, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.”
Memorial Day is more than a long weekend or the unofficial start of summer. It is a clarion call to remember our fallen, to reflect on the values that define us, and to recommit ourselves to preserving the republic they fought to secure.
As Americans, we understand that freedom is not free—it is earned with blood, sustained through vigilance, and passed on through education. The 917 Society does not take that responsibility lightly. With every Constitution we place in the hands of a student, we are extending the legacy of the fallen and fortifying the future of the nation they loved.
This Memorial Day, let us honor our fallen not just with flags and flowers, but with a firm resolve: to uphold the Constitution, teach it to our children, and live as citizens worthy of the sacrifices made for our liberty. That is our duty. That is our mission. Please join us at www.917Society.org
