What the 917 Society is seeing this year
The 917 Society has distributed the 250th Anniversary Edition pocket Constitution to 8th-grade classrooms across all 50 states. This year has been one of the highest-demand in the organization's history. Teachers are using it as the centerpiece
of units connecting the founding document to America's semiquincentennial — readings, debates, essay contests, mock Constitutional Conventions.
Three last-minute ideas that work
The "I Didn't Know That" exercise. Students read the pocket Constitution and write down one thing they didn't know before. Share with the class. The results always surprise everyone — including the teacher.
Constitutional headlines. Pull five current news headlines. Have students find the constitutional clause, amendment, or principle that connects to each one. Fast, engaging, immediate.
A letter to the founders. Students write a short letter to one Framer — telling them what has changed, what has stayed the same, and one question they wish they could ask.
