Constitution Day 8th Grade Program: Free Resources for Classrooms That Are Too Quiet

An opinion piece in Education Week this month carried a striking headline: "America at 250: Our Classrooms Are Too Quiet." A high school history teacher reported that her students weren't arguing in class — not because they lacked opinions, but because they lacked the foundational knowledge to form them.

She's not alone. An NPR/PBS Marist poll released for America's 250th birthday found that too many Americans can't name the three branches of government. The Christian Science Monitor declared civics education is "coming back." Education Next published "250 Reasons This Is the Time for a Renaissance in Civic Education." The Atlanta Journal-Constitution published a thank-you to civics educators "forming our nation's future."

The diagnosis is clear: America's classrooms need a jolt of constitutional energy. And Constitution Day 2026 — September 17 — is the perfect moment to deliver it.

But here's the thing teachers know: you can't teach the Constitution if students don't have one in their hands.

That's where The 917 Society comes in.

THE CONSTITUTION DAY 8TH GRADE PROGRAM THAT SHIPS FREE

Every year, The 917 Society distributes free pocket Constitutions to 8th grade classrooms across all 50 states. It's our core mission. It costs teachers nothing. It costs schools nothing. There is no catch.

Here's how it works:

1. Teachers request Constitutions through our website at 917society.org/order-constitutions 2. We ship pocket Constitutions directly to your school — enough for your entire 8th grade class 3. You receive them before Constitution Day (September 17), so your students can hold the document while they learn about it 4. No cost. No obligation. No follow-up required.

This is not a sample. This is not a trial. It's the full program — and it's been running since 2010.

WHY 8TH GRADE?

Eighth grade is the year most American students study the Constitution in depth. It's when they learn about the three branches, the Bill of Rights, and the framework of self-governance. A pocket Constitution in an 8th grader's hand transforms a textbook chapter into something real, tangible, and personal.

They don't just read about the Constitution. They read the Constitution.

And that makes all the difference. A student who holds the document is a student who remembers it.

WHAT TEACHERS GET WITH THE PROGRAM

When you request pocket Constitutions through our Constitution Day 8th grade program, you receive:

- One pocket Constitution per 8th grade student — the full text, Amendments included, in a durable pocket-size format - Free shipping to your school anywhere in the United States - No limit on class size — we've shipped to classrooms of 20 and entire grade levels of 300+

We also provide free digital resources on our website, including historical context, Constitution Day activity ideas, and classroom discussion guides. But the heart of the program is simple: the document itself, in every student's hands.

CONSTITUTION DAY 2026 FALLS ON A WEDNESDAY — START PLANNING NOW

September 17, 2026 falls on a Wednesday — right in the middle of the school week. That means teachers can build an entire week of Constitution-focused lessons around it.

Here are a few ways to use the pocket Constitutions in your classroom:

- Preamble analysis: Have students read the Preamble aloud, then rewrite it in their own words - Bill of Rights scavenger hunt: Give students scenarios and ask which amendment applies - "Which branch?" quiz: Present real-world scenarios and have students identify which branch of government handles it - Constitution convention role-play: Assign students to represent different states and debate a proposed amendment - Letter to a Founder: Ask students to write a letter to a Founding Father explaining what the Constitution means to them today

All of these are more powerful when every student has the actual document in front of them.

THE MOMENT IS NOW

The EdWeek piece was right — America's classrooms are too quiet on civics. But the solution isn't complicated. It starts with putting the Constitution in a student's hands.

The America 250 moment has created unprecedented energy around civic education. The National Constitution Center's Teaching 250 curriculum, the U.S. Department of Education's Freedom 250 initiative, and coalitions of educators across the country are all pointing in the same direction.

But curriculum needs the document. And that's what we provide — free, to every 8th grade teacher who asks.

HOW TO REQUEST YOUR FREE CONSTITUTIONS

It takes two minutes. Go to 917society.org/order-constitutions, fill out the request form with your school name and the number of 8th grade students, and we handle the rest.

Requests are fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis, and September is our busiest month. The earlier you request, the sooner your Constitutions arrive — and the more time you have to build your Constitution Day lesson plan.

FOR SUPPORTERS WHO WANT TO HELP

If you're not a teacher but want to make sure every 8th grader in America has this experience, you can donate to fund the program. Every contribution goes directly toward printing and shipping pocket Constitutions to classrooms — at no cost to the schools, teachers, or students.

Support the mission at 917society.org/donate

Because the best way to celebrate 250 years of freedom is to make sure the next generation actually reads the document that made it possible.

READ IT. KNOW IT. CARRY IT.

The 917 Society is a Nashville-based nonprofit dedicated to putting a free pocket Constitution in the hands of every 8th grader in America. Since 2010, we've distributed millions of Constitutions to classrooms in all 50 states. Learn more at 917society.org.
