This is it, writers — the final countdown. Entries for the 917 Society's 2026 Essay Contest are due October 1, 2026, and that date will be here before you know it.
If you're an 8th-grade student (or the teacher of one), here's your last-call guide to getting your essay submitted on time.

Theme: "What America 250 Means to Me"
Who can enter: 8th-grade students anywhere in the United States
Length: 300–500 words

Students, this is your chance to put into words what this country's 250th anniversary means to your generation. There's no single right answer. Maybe America 250 means standing in awe of the founders who signed their names in Philadelphia. Maybe it means thinking about what the Constitution makes possible in your own life — your school, your town, your plans for the future. Maybe it means honoring the generations of Americans who expanded its promises.
Whatever it means to you, we want to read it.
How to Submit (Teachers, This One's for You)
Essays are submitted by teachers on behalf of their students:

Three Tips for a Strong Final Draft
If your essay is still in progress, keep these in mind:
Lead with your own voice. The best essays sound like a real 8th grader — not a textbook.
Be specific. One vivid, personal detail beats three vague patriotic phrases.
Connect past to present. The judges love seeing students link the Constitution's 250-year history to their own lives in 2026.
