The 917 Society is proud to announce returning Statesman Founders Club Member, Dr. Ming Wang. Dr. Wang, Harvard & MIT (MD, magna cum laude); PhD (laser physics), is a world-renowned laser eye surgeon, philanthropist, and a co-founder of the non-profit Common Ground Network.

As a teenager, Ming fought valiantly to escape China’s Cultural Revolution – during which millions of innocent youth were deported to remote areas to face a life sentence of hard labor and poverty. He came to America with only $50 and earned two doctorate degrees, one in laser physics and one in medicine, and graduated with the highest honors from Harvard Medical School and MIT.

Wang Foundation for Sight Restoration has helped patients from over 40 states in the U.S. and 55 countries, with all sight restoration surgeries performed free-of-charge. Dr. Wang was named the Kiwanis Nashvillian of the Year for his lifelong dedication to help blind orphaned children from around the world. The film “Sight” is based on Dr. Wang’s autobiography “From Darkness to Sight” and co-stars Greg Kinnear.

We are honored to have Dr. Wang serve as The 917 Society Founders Club President this year. Dr. Wang was named our Founders Club Cup winner for 2020 for his tireless efforts to advance our mission, joining the 2019 winner, Congressman Mark Green and 2018 winner, Senator Kerry Roberts.

“In my view, the foundation of freedom and liberty in America is NOT solely based on:
– an initial group of enlightened American leaders, such as those at Plymouth or on the Mayflower, since if the idea of freedom was held only by a small group of people, it was invariably crushed, as exemplified by what happened at the Tiananmen Square Massacre on June 4, 1989.
– America’s great natural resources, since there are countries (such as in the Middle East) that have even more natural resources, but still do not have freedom today.
– America’s past great leaders, since we do also have had our own share of less-than-perfect presidents. However, none have ever had the audacity, to change the constitution in order to stay in power forever, as leaders in many other countries have done historically, and even today (e.g., Xi in China

The foundation of freedom and liberty in America is the Constitution. The Constitution is an experiment by God, who used this special land called America, to show that it is indeed possible for human beings to organize a society that does have freedom and liberty, PROVIDED that people do respect and follow a common set of rules that protects that freedom, and that set of rules is…

…. the American Constitution!”
